What is Boudoir photography and why is it so popular? Everyone seems to have their own ideas about what boudoir photography is. Well, let’s start with what it isn't. It isn't sleazy, it isn't degrading, it doesn't mean you have to be nude and it doesn't mean the photographer is creepy, lol

So what is it all about? It’s about you and who you are on your more personal side. It’s about your own special beauty and sensuality. It’s about the experience and how it can make you feel about yourself. A boudoir session can be very empowering and FUN while preserving your experience for years to come.

Boudoir sessions have become very popular and fashionable because every woman wants or needs to know she is beautiful in her own way.

Sensual or flirty images and small books of these images are now often given as gifts for those special someone’s. Women are now treating themselves with this experience after a milestone achievement, weight loss or recovering from an illness or even divorce. It is also common now for brides to surprise their future husbands with a boudoir book on their wedding day.

Now what to wear? Well that will depend on your personality. J Basically, what are you comfortable wearing? A sexy robe, lingerie, boy shorts, thongs, corsets, fancy bras, stockings, heels, boots or maybe even your guy’s favorite team tee. It’s all about you and your personality really so we will talk and decide on what works best for you.

Why Professional Photographers Charge What They Do?

Why do potential clients feel that all we do as professional photographers is press a shutter release button? The arrival of the digital camera has created the perception that almost anyone can be a professional photographer. You know, the “P” on that little dial does stand for “Professional” after all, right? I know all the pros are laughing right now, as the “P” really stands for “Program.”

First lets have a little fun. Raise your hands if you have no responsibilities or bills to pay and you would like to work full time for free. Yes, I said, free. Oh, and by the way, you will have to put out money to do this too. Most of us cannot afford to have such an expensive and time-intensive hobby. We must work to put food on the table and have a roof over our heads. Photographers are no different. We are self- employed business owners who must work to earn a living. So, lets take a look at the photography business, so that our clients have a better understand of what goes into a shoot and why we charge what we charge.

When a client begins the process of searching for a photographer, through advertising, on-line search, referral, or viewing the photographer’s web site, an expense is involved. Once initial contact has been established, the photographer’s consulting time with the potential client begins. Several phone calls and one or more meetings may be involved before the session is scheduled. Once the session is scheduled a planning process initiates including the creative development of the shoot.

Each shoot requires a unique posing plan, studio set-up, props, lighting and equipment for the look and feel of the session. If it “on location” shoot, the photographer will scout the location in advance to choose shooting sites and plan poses. Shoots sometimes require the scheduling of clothing and hair stylists and make-up artists. It is necessary to have a reliable group of professionals that can produce high quality, professional results in these three key areas. Prior to the day, equipment is cleaned, cards checked, camera and flash batteries charged, and equipment packed (if on location). The equipment list needs to be double checked. Since time is money, the time it takes to do all of this preparation should be calculated into the price of the shoot.

Editing, The Big Time Consumer

Clients are no longer happy with images straight out of the camera. They now expect edited images. Often the images require massive editing and manipulation to meet the client’s expectations. Removing facial imperfections may not be such a big deal, but editing out tan lines, or stretch marks while keeping the image looking beautiful is an enormous consumer of time and resources. For portrait or boudoir images, there may be heavy edits such as balancing eye size, sliming a figure, or even combining two images to achieve the desired look. A good example is when everything looks great but a smile would make the image perfect. It could take several days to edit a session before the client gets to select their final images. If a book or calendar is part of a client’s package, the book layout and ordering process require time and should also be part of the pricing of the final product.

Clients usually have no idea of the business expenses involved in the professional photography business. Equipment and repairs are expensive. Cameras and other equipment have a finite lifespan and must be replaced. Education, hours of research, business cards, portfolio shots, networking, following up on referrals, writing proposals, attending and exhibiting at trade shows, learning new techniques to bring the best looks to our work have an associated cost of time and money. We have the same business expenses as other businesses, insurance, computers with huge storage capabilities, office supplies, equipment, software, heat, air conditioning, web site maintenance and hosting, and more.

Then there is the real truth, are you ready....... not all photographers are created equal! Clients willingly pay for the photographers’ creativity and skill level. The best can charge more and get it. You would not go to a five-star dining establishment and expect to pay hamburger prices, or see a top medical specialist for what you pay to see your family physician. Its just like anything else in life, the higher your skill level and better your reputation the higher the compensation you are able to command.

There are so many people with digital cameras who call themselves professional photographers that clients can’t understand the disparity in pricing between what a professional photographer charges, vs. a “weekend warrior” with a day job. In general, those who pick up a digital camera and think they are a professional photographer or the weekend warrior has often not put in the time to learn about the business, nor has he or she studied to improve their art, or learned how to properly pose their subject, be aware of their background or edit their images. Clients get excited when they get offered all their images on a cd but clients don't know to wonder why this is when most professionals wont even consider offering this with out an additional fee. A professional will edit your best images while many non pros don't want to be bothered or do not know how to select the best images or edit them. A cd full of bad images is not really desirable is it?

Even though this is a long post, potential clients should now have a better idea of all that goes into a shoot with a professional photographer, why we charge what we do, and the reasons why they should use the services of a professional to achieve superior, professional results.

Being a creative photographer with vision

Sometimes just taking a good picture is not good enough. Sometimes you need the vision to see potential in something that isn't there when you take the shot. It's a vision in what I call my minds eye. True professional photographers can take a good/great image. An artistic photographer can look at the image they are taking and see something very different, evolving the image into a master piece to the delight of their clients. The following images are examples of combining skill, art and the eye.

Lets look at this image from a shoot with Adrienne. As you can see cool idea but the shooting location was a mess as far as the background goes. The editing process was a nightmare but the resulting image was worth all the tedious work involved.

The end result looks like this. I decided to create a dark background and felt this would show off the model and lions while not being distracting. The finished image is classy, elegant, rich in color and most importantly...people love to look at it. After all a good photo is just that but one people love to look at is much more interesting and exciting. That doesn't mean as a photographer you have to take a picture that requires a lot of editing but then again we aren't talking about that at this moment. We are talking about seeing something different than what you actually see when looking through the view finder and planning while you take to shot so you can create that vision.

Lets look at the next image. LOL, I think I took 10 shots of this looking to get just what I wanted for the finished image. Here is a good example of having a vision and taking the shots according to what you need to get what you see in your "minds eye".

Was it worth taking 10 shots to get this as the finished image? :) My clients sure think so and so do I. This is just one reason I always shoot weddings with a 2nd shooter. It gives me the freedom to get the shots I need to make images like this. With out having the vision of what I wanted the completed image to look like my bride and groom would not have this amazing image.

Try looking at things differently the next time you pick up a camera or view a photographers work. If we don't look at things differently we miss out on so much potential and the world would be a boring place.

YAY! We have our first Winner from our Essence of a Woman Contest!

It was very exciting to call Lisa Menz to tell her she was our winner. Lisa was very excited too and as it turns out she is the Inn Keeper of the Fox and Hound Bed and Breakfast in New Hope PA! Being Thankful, A Story About Living

*11/26 - I have made an update to this post, go all the way to the end to read it.

I am sitting here thinking about all the things going on in the world and my battle with diabetes. This may not be the place to share this but tonight I am so THANKFUL that I am going to anyway.

You see I have fought every inch of the way to become a photographer, not just a photographer but a photographer who takes my passion and makes it into images that bring smiles to peoples faces and images that can proudly grace your walls.

While I have scrapped and worked from the time I got up in the morning to about the time I go to bed at night at growing and developing my skills I have also been battling diabetes. For years it has been out of control and meds did not seem to help. It got to the point where I gave up trying but still found the drive to perfect my photography skills. I wanted to leave something, achieve something, contribute something, so photography became my driving force. I love seeing clients excited over their images, prints, canvases and books. I was able to make a little difference in other peoples lives with what I do but I knew my health was getting to a serious stage but had little hope that it would ever get better.

That is until one of my sisters shared a DVD about a raw vegan diet that has been working very well for diabetics. I cried as I watched the DVD with the success stories of people getting off their meds and I started to feel that there may be hope after all. I decided to try this way of eating, lol, I will tell you , it wasn't easy but I did it. After all this was my quality of life I was fighting for.

I started in mid Sept of 2010 and worked at making adjustments and learning how to prepare new meals. I started testing my blood again everyday and as I saw how high my sugars were really wondered if this would work for me. My family was very supportive and helped me deal with making such huge changes. After having blood sugars of over 550, drop to the mid 300's and then the mid sometimes low 200's I was thinking this is working! I hovered in the 200's for several weeks and then went to see my Dr.

While this was great improvement I knew the readings were still too high. My Dr decided, with me in agreement to at least for now try me on a med again. I started taking 1 pill a day the end of last week, my sugar started coming down, under 200 in the last 3 days.

Tonight 2 hours after eating it was down to ....drum roll...123! I still have some work to do but there is hope and I can now envision having many more years to work at my photography and bringing smiles and excitement to my customers faces! So while this doesn't really pertain to photography, it does, it's my story, my hope, my life and my dream which includes photography :)! I should add that I am enjoying a lot of the foods I am now eating and don't miss a lot of the old foods I use to eat. Although, when my husband makes his incredible meatballs and gravy....that is a real challenge and so hard to resist! lol

So appropriate at this time of the year, a HUGE THANK you to my husband and family for your support and love through all the adjustments. I am THANKFUL VERY THANKFUL....... Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
